Few motifs in contemporary art are as instantly recognisable as Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkins. Their unique form, covered in polka dots, has made Kusama a cultural icon, and are held in institutions all over the world in the form of sculptures, paintings, installations, and prints.Â
Kusama became fascinated by the pumpkin’s tactile surface and bulbous forms as a child in Japan, and the form followed her through to adulthood when the crop was valued for its reliability after the Second World War. For Kusama, they represent both sustainability and humility, whilst also embodying resilience during adversity.
