Since the early 1990s, Jeff Koons has been exploring the boundaries between high-end art and popular culture through his iconic Balloon Animals sculptures.

Inspired by the ephemeral joy of party balloons, Koons reimagines these childhood symbols with mirror-like finishes, transforming the temporary into something monumental and enduring. The result is a body of work that is both playful and deeply reflective, a celebration of form and the allure of innocence.

Koons’ fascination with mass culture and kitsch lies at the heart of these works. By enlarging balloon animals to huge proportions and executing them with meticulous precision, he invites viewers to confront their ideas of taste, value, and nostalgia. These sculptures, with their vibrant colours, draw you in with their visual simplicity and linger in the mind.

The creative process behind his large-scale sculptures is rooted in precision. Although they appear light and effortless, each piece undergoes an intense period of design, engineering, and fabrication. Koons’ team of highly skilled artisans and technicians ensure that every curve, seam, and reflection is perfectly rendered, with the final works being so pristine that they become reflections of the viewer themselves.

Produced between 2017 and 2021, Clifton Gallery’s selection of Jeff Koon’s Balloon Animals are all produced using Limoges porcelain covered in a chromatic coating to further highlight their vibrancy. These life-size sculptures distil the glossy exuberance of Koons's large-scale originals into a more accessible format.
