Bridget Riley is internationally acclaimed for her iconic geometric paintings that became synonymous with the Op Art movement of the 1960s. Blending elements of modernist abstraction and visual poetry, Riley’s work explores themes of perception, rhythm, and movement.
Cherub, a screenprint on paper created in 2020, exemplifies Riley’s continued exploration of optical phenomena. Released in line with her exhibition Learning to See at Turner Contemporary, the work is based on a wall painting featured within the show. The painting, executed directly onto the gallery wall, was created to draw the audience in closer than would be possible with a painting on canvas. Riley envisioned an exhibition that engages the audience in a visual experience that is as cerebral as it is soothing.
