Since the early 1990s, Tracey Emin has been experimenting with neon lights, creating short, illuminated phrases in her distinctive handwriting. Growing up in Margate, Emin was surrounded by neon shop signs, which inspired a joy in her and later became a defining element in her confessional artwork. By manipulating the coloured lights to create distinctly poetic and personal sentiments, Emin subverts the commercial use of neon lighting.
Emin’s creative process often begins with writing. For her neon works, she starts by handwriting a phrase that best captures the sentiment she is feeling at that moment. Importance is placed on this handwriting being preserved, as it gives the works a spontaneous appeal and transforms the neons into a form of self-portrait.
