Created in 1989, Sirocco exemplifies Helen Frankenthaler’s mastery of texture and form. The work carries Frankenthaler’s hallmark painterly qualities into the realm of printmaking, with the title referencing the hot, dry Mediterranean wind. Its glowing forms and measured tones seem to capture the sensation of atmosphere in motion, like wind forming patterns.

Details: Mixografia in colours on handmade paper 1989 92.7 x 87.6 cm Edition of 52 + 11 Artist Proofs Signed, dated and numbered by Frankenthaler in pencil Framed Excellent condition
Produced using the innovative Mixografia technique, Frankenthaler first created a maquette, from which reverse copper plates were cast to retain every nuance of the original design. Inks were then hand-applied to the plates, overlaid with moist cotton-fibre paper pulp, and pressed under extreme pressure so the paper absorbed the pigments into its fibres, yielding richly saturated, fresco-like works.
About Helen Frankenthaler:
Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) was a pioneering American painter celebrated for her transformative role in postwar abstraction. She is best known for her “soak-stain” technique, in which thinned paint was poured onto unprimed canvas to create luminous fields of colour that bridged Abstract Expressionism and Colour Field painting. Drawing inspiration from nature, Frankenthaler balanced spontaneity with control, allowing chance to shape her compositions. Over six decades, she worked across painting, printmaking, and works on paper, exhibiting internationally and influencing generations of artists. Her achievements earned her numerous honours, including the National Medal of Arts, and her work continues to redefine the possibilities of colour and abstraction. Frankenthaler’s works are housed in major museums and institutions around the globe including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Tate.
