This unique crayon and felt-tip pen on paper is a compelling example of Auerbach’s practise, depicting Mornington Crescent, a street he frequently painted next to his studio in North London.
Auerbach worked in the same studio from 1954 until his death in 2024, and the surrounding area became a major subject of his art, with him preferring the subjects of his paintings to be close to him. In 1978 he wrote:
“I’ve got certain attachments to people and places, and it seems to me to be simply less worthwhile to record things to which I’m less attached, since I know about things that nobody else knows about.”

About Frank Auerbach:
Frank Auerbach (1931-2024) was a German-born British painter acclaimed for his layered portraits and urban landscapes that capture the intensity and depth of his life. A child refugee from Nazi Germany, his move to London in the 1940s became an inspiration to his work, drawing deeply from the city’s postwar atmosphere of reconstruction and resilience. Auerbach built his compositions over months or even years, meticulously repainting his works to transform paint into a presence, merging form and emotion in a uniquely physical way. Over his seven decade long career, he became one of Britain’s most respected postwar artists, with a major retrospective at Tate Britain and representation in institutions including the British Museum, the National Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art.
