David Hockney's Swimming Pools

Swimming pools have now become forever associated with David Hockney, who moved to LA in 1964 in search of the sharp light and shadows he had seen in the Hollywood movies as a student.

“Water changes its look more than in any other form, creating dancing lines with all the colours of the spectrum.”

Drawn in by the glamour of Hollywood and having had enough of the grey and dingy post-war London, in 1963 Hockney sold a collection of his paintings in London and, the following year moved his home and studio to Santa Monica, California.

Here he quickly became inspired by the calm and free-flowing lines created in California’s swimming pools, explaining, “Water can be anything. It can be any colour, it’s movable, and it has no set visual description.”

Since 1964, Hockney has consistently been inspired by these fluid lines and still continues to copy their movement 60 years later.
