Since the early 1980s, Thierry Noir has been transforming city walls into bold, expressive statements through his signature style of colourful, cartoon-like figures.

Whilst living in West Berlin near the Berlin Wall, French-born Noir began painting on the Wall in 1984 as a spontaneous act of defiance and artistic freedom. Using simple lines, vivid colours, and 2-D figures, his work quickly became symbolic of resistance against oppression and the absurdity of division.

Noir’s creative process is rooted in immediacy. Often working with house paint and limited time, his characters were designed to be painted quickly and became visual slogans that spoke for both playfulness and protest. With their exaggerated features and ever-staring eyes, Noir’s figures reflect his belief that art can be direct, accessible, and impactful. Over time, his murals gained international attention and turned the Berlin Wall from a symbol of fear into one of creativity and hope, with his legacy remaining as strong today.
