Zhang Xiaogang (b. 1958) is a leading Chinese contemporary artist known for evocative figurative paintings that reflect the complexities of memory, family, and collective history. Drawing inspiration from old family photographs and the atmosphere of the Cultural Revolution, he paints pale, ghostlike figures with subtle distortions and symbolic details to evoke a feeling of intimacy. His restrained palette and dreamlike surfaces suggest fading recollections and shifting identities in a rapidly changing China. Since emerging on the international scene in the 1990s, Zhang has exhibited widely, and his works are held in major institutions around the world, including Tate Modern, the Guggenheim Museum and the He Xiangning Art Museum in China.
