Thierry Noir (b.1958) is a French street artist recognised as being one of the first people to paint on the Berlin Wall. After moving to Berlin in 1982, Noir began transforming the oppressive structure with vibrant, large-scale murals, aiming to demystify and ridicule the Wall, turning it into a symbol of creative resistance. Noir's signature style developed into bold, colourful characters with thick black outlines which explore themes of freedom, rebellion, and the human spirit, serving as a metaphor for the Wall itself and reflecting his experiences living in its shadow. Noir's art has gained international recognition, leading to collaborations and exhibitions worldwide. In 2023, his auction record was set with the painting ‘Brompton Road at 6pm’, which features his caricatured side-profile faces, achieving £107,950 at Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated sale.
