Sean Scully (b. 1945) is an Irish painter acclaimed for his abstract canvases that feature stripes, blocks, and grids painted in rich, evocative hues that capture light and mood with drama and delicacy. His use of soft edges and unique paint applications lends a sense of tactility to his compositions, allowing them to focus on the complex interplay of material and form. His deeply personal perspective has seen him involve core elements of the visual world in his work, from the sky and sea to stone architectural structures, as well as human emotion, from grief and pain to fatherhood. Over his 50-year-long career, he has become one of most recognised abstract painters, with major solo shows at the Albertine and the National Gallery in London, and representation in institutions including the Tate, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.
