Pierre Soulages (1919–2022) was a pioneering French painter renowned for his profound exploration of black as a source of light and depth. Working with thick layers of paint and a range of tools, he transformed dark surfaces into vibrant, shifting fields that respond to the viewer’s movement. Rooted in abstraction, his art emphasises materiality and the play of light. Over eight decades, Soulages exhibited worldwide and in 2015 received France’s highest cultural honour, the Grand Cross. His paintings are held in major institutions worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim Museum, and MoMA.
