Gerhard Richter (b.1932) is a German artist renowned for his diverse body of work that bridges realism and abstraction. Richter has developed a practice that defies categorisation, experimenting with photorealistic paintings, abstract compositions, and conceptual pieces that challenge the boundaries of perception and representation. His signature approach often involves blurring photographic images in paint, reflecting themes of memory, history, and the unreliability of visual truth. He is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary artists, with his works housed in major institutions worldwide such as Tate, the Centre Pompidou and Neue Nationalgalerie. In 2015, his auction record was set with ‘Abstraktes Bild (1986)’, which sold for $46.3 million at Sotheby’s.
