Ed Ruscha (born 1937) is best known for his exploration of American culture, language, and the urban landscape. His work often combines words, images, and everyday motifs, reflecting on the ordinary of modern life with wit, irony, and clarity. Ruscha’s art captures highways, gas stations, signage, and the architecture of Los Angeles, transforming the everyday into iconic. He works across painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, books, and film, and he has exhibited internationally for decades, including representing the United States at the Venice Biennale in 2005. Ruscha has been widely recognised for his contributions to art, including being elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and appointed a member of the British Royal Academy.
